"I completed a placement with Corus in the summer of my penultimate year at University and really enjoyed the project work and responsibility I was given. The placement was really successful and Corus offered to sponsor me through my final year. Since I joined Corus at their Scunthorpe base I have had lots of opportunity to experience different areas as well as extra help and training.

"My placements have included the Ironworks, which involved calculating iron balances for the blast furnaces, and Concast, where I acted as a liaison between the bloom caster and its customer, the Bloom and Billet mill. As part of these placements I also spent some time working shifts on plant. This gave me a much greater understanding of the processes and a wider exposure to the workforce here.

"I am currently based in the Technology Development section for the Plate Mill. Our work incorporates product and process development and we are involved at all stages from the commissioning of capital investment projects through to individual trial rollings of new steel grades and obtaining approval for our products from the appropriate shipping authorities.

"Corus really encourage you to settle in and continue to develop professionally. I was given a mentor, who I can discuss my progress and career plans with, and training in project management, influencing skills and assertiveness as well as specific technical areas such as Iron and Steel Metallurgy for Non-Metallurgists and Steelmaking and Continuous Casting.  Next year I'm hoping to start a part-time MSc in Advanced Engineering Metals, supported by Corus, which will help towards Chartership with the IOM3.

"I have also had the opportunity to get involved with projects outside of the office with Corus. I'm a Science and Engineering Ambassador and have helped out with the Formula 1 in Schools competition, judging at the regional final. I have also attended careers fairs and recruitment events across the UK meeting students and graduates and telling them all about the great opportunities Corus has on offer."
